As Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s 5-year term is set to end in 2024, he told BBC last week that there will not be a Ukrainian presidential election in 2024 if the country is still under martial law due to Russia’s war in the country. The Ukrainian leader said that both the 2024 presidential election and the parliamentary elections, which are supposed to be held this October, will be extended indefinitely.

When asked specifically about holding the parliamentary elections on time, Zelensky said, “If we have martial law, we cannot have elections. The constitution prohibits any elections during martial law. If there is no martial law, then there will be.”

In his latest interview, however, he expressed hope that the war would be over by next year in Ukraine and that life, and presumably elections, would be returning to normal.

Zelensky’s sentiments were also reiterated by the speaker of the Ukrainian parliament, Ruslan Stefanchuk, who confirmed that the constitution doesn’t allow for elections under martial law, which Zelensky declared after the Russian invasion, ZeroHedge reported.

“Ukrainian legislation stipulates it is impossible to hold any elections during martial law. And this makes sense,” Stefanchuk said.

The speaker added that if the elections were to hold while martial law is in effect it could “lead to the rupture of the state, which our enemy is waiting for. That is why I think the most correct and wise decision is to hold elections immediately after the end of martial law.”

Not only did Zelensky declare martial law, but he also consolidated his power by banning the Opposition Platform – For Life, which was the main opposition party in the country and held 44 seats at the time it was banned. He also banned 10 additional opposition parties, nationalized the media, an recently banned Russian books from being imported to Ukraine.
