Poland’s de-facto leader and head of the Law and Justice Party (PiS) Jaroslaw Kaczynski declared recently that newly-elected French President Emmanuelle Macron was more of a celebrity than the leader of a nuclear power. Poland and France have been locked in a war of words as Macron has supported legal measures in Brussels against Poland as well as threatening to reform labor laws that will hurt Polish interests.
“Unfortunately nowadays presidential elections often turn into a sort of plebiscite won not by a responsible politician but rather by a celebrity politician,” Kaczynski told the newspaper Gazeta Polska. “The example of France shows in a striking way how much bad can come of such a situation.”
For his part, Macron recently called Poland a country that has decided to go against European interests in many areas” and risks finding itself “on the margins” of the EU, reported AFP.
Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo called Macron ‘arrogant’ and said, “It really worries me that the French president is currently undermining the pillars of the European Union and trying to introduce protectionism.”
