Montenegro Defies Russia And Joins NATO

The tiny Balkan nation of Montenegro, with 620,000 inhabitants, has formerly joined the NATO alliance in a ceremony in Washington Monday. The action has infuriated its long-term cultural partner, Russia, and threatened its tourism industry.

“Russia reserves the right to take counter-measures on the basis of reciprocity amid the Montenegrin authorities’ hostile stance,” according to the Russian state news agency TASS.

Part of possible Russian retaliation is a ban on Russian tourists into the tiny nation where 200,000 Russians visit every year on holiday. 80,000 Russians own property there according the Associated Press.

Russia has also threatened other types of financial and political retaliation.
