The Russian military has established a new airfield in the disputed Kuril Islands. The Russian Federation and Japan have argued over control of the islands since WWII.

The Russian Eastern Military District issued a statement which read, “Military servicemen have built a runway of 28,000 metal plates, runway markings have been installed,” reported Russian state news agency TASS.

“In addition, communication tools and navigational equipment have also been installed. The airfield has received a state registration certificate and an operational status license, the press service added.”
Russia and Japan have been negotiating to sign a peace treaty for the Second World War but to this date have been unsuccessful.
