As the Middle East region explodes in conflict with global players, the Kremlin has a decision to make on mobilization.
Russian President Vladimir Putin sits between an incoming Trump administration and a chance for peace, and now the need for additional Russian forces in Syria, outside of Ukraine, for the Kremlin’s need to keep the Assad regime in power in the face of a massive assault by Turkish aid for Sunni jihadist and Kurdish rebels, likely assisted by Israel, which desires Iranian influence removed by the region.
Syria is the Kremlin’s toe hold in the Middle East.
Mobilization in Russia has caused a flight of information technology talent from the country. The announcement of a new round of military recruitment will be even less popular.
Israeli journalists tied to the IDF are calling for continued American forces in the area, something which Trump has been against in the past.
It seems there is a deal to be made on the Russian presence, removal of American forces, and security for Israel. Of course Iranian actions in the region have been nefarious, but if anyone can make that deal, Trump can.
If Putin announces another round of mobilization, it will be quite obvious Putin knows more about the chances for peace than the Russian public, and the world at large.
Or does he wait for Trump and see what happens?
