According to a report in Der Spiegel, German foreign intelligence has assessed that Ukraine is losing a “three-digit number” of troops daily. Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND) has said that it is “alarmed” at the high number of casualties suffered by Ukrainian forces and that Berlin believes that the number of losses reached three digits daily during the battle of Bakhmut. German politicians were informed of the high number of casualties during a secret Bundestag meeting last week.

The German BND believes that Russian forces are also suffering high numbers of casualties as they use soldiers as “cannon fodder,” while concerns are growing that the number of Ukrainian losses will have dangerous consequences in coming battles.

Meanwhile, White House officials have expressed concern that Ukraine expended too many resources in its effort to defend Bakhmut and is advising Kyiv against launching any major counteroffensive in an attempt to retake the city. The Biden administration is also advising Kyiv that sending additional troops to defend Bakhmut is keeping Ukrainian soldiers from attacking Russians in other locations.

Bakhmut, which is in the Donetsk region, has seen intense fighting for several months, with an escalation last week. The BND is concerned that if Russia is able to take Bakhmut, then it would allow Russian forces to advance further and make additional gains.

While the battle rages in Bakhmut, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky continues to plead with NATO nations to send modern tanks to Ukraine, arguing that they are essential to Ukraine’s success on the frontlines. However, several countries, including the U.S. and Germany, have resisted sending tanks to Kyiv for fear of further straining already tense relations with Moscow.
