Russia To Test New ICBM That It Says Can Penetrate US Missile Defenses

Russia plans to finally begin tests of the R-28 Sarmat (NATO: SS-30 Satan) intercontinental ballistic missile that is says can overwhelm U.S. missile defenses with multiple warheads and decoys. The projectile can carry up to ten tons including warheads and hypersonic glide vehicles.

“Delayed several times, the tests of the RS-28’s launch and first few seconds of flight are to be carried out at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome, in Russia’s north-west, before the end of the year,” writes The Independent.

RIA Novosti said individual warheads could have yields up to 750kt and that RS-28 launch silos would be built to withstand seven nuclear strikes.

The Kremlin wants the RS-28 to comprise all of Russia’s nuclear land-based ICBM deterrent force within the next decade and operational by 2020.
