Continuing reforms in Ukraine have been critical to the continued release of tranches of the IMF’s $17.5 billion aid package. U.K. Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, says those reforms may be faltering. He particularly pointed out the selection of Supreme Court justices and anti-graft legislation as two ares of special concern to the British.
“There are worrying signs that reform is faltering and we’re seeing some concern about selection of new members of the Supreme Court, a lack of progress in creating special anti-corruption courts,” Johnson said.
“Corruption has got to be rooted out, I think we all agree, across the board,” reported Reuters.
The Bank of Ukraine said today that the country would only receive $3 billion, instead of $4.5 billion this year from the IMF due to delays in implementing needed change.
Johnson however, remained positive on Ukraine’s future. “Yes of course everyone accepts that there is more to be done and the prime minister has indicated that. The overwhelming feeling of the meeting was that Ukraine is going in the right direction.”
