The President of the European Council, former liberal, Polish prime minister, Donald Tusk, publicly continued to bash the Polish government, run by the conservative Law and Justice Party (PiS). The EU official asked if current diplomatic tensions between Poland and Ukraine were a ‘Kremlin plan’.
Poland Says Europe Must Wake Up To Clash Of Civilizations
“Alarm! Intense dispute with Ukraine, isolation within the European Union, departure from the rule of law and judicial independence, attack on the non-governmental sector and free media – is this PiS strategy or the Kremlin’s plan? Too similar to sleep peacefully,” Tusk wrote on Twitter, reported AFP.
The Polish Prime Minister, Beata Szydlo, was not amused, saying, “(Donald Tusk as European Council President) has done nothing for Poland.
“Today, by using his position to attack the Polish government, he’s attacking Poland,” reported AFP.
Poland and Ukraine have been at odds over Polish demands to label the execution of approximately 100,000 Poles during WWII as genocide, although the two nations have cooperated on security matters after the Russian annexation of the Crimean peninsula.
The use of ‘Russia’ as an attack against Western nationalist governments by liberal politicians seems to have become routine. Poland has angered both sides of the East/West conflict. One of the most obvious examples of Poland upsetting Moscow has been the NATO deployment of ground-based, AEGIS missile defense inside Poland.
