The attack on Armenia’s Christian identity is by no means a new occurrence. Rather it is business as usual by the Prime Minister of Armenia who clearly prefers to be in Brussels than in Yerevan. The backbone of the Armenian nation, the Armenian Apostolic Church, is being systematically destroyed by the Prime Minister and his government.
In exchange for remaking of Armenia in the image of European Union, Armenian Church, land, memory and sovereignty of the nation are being destroyed by Prime Minister of the country.
Declaring The Fourth Republic — Burying Karabakh
But what Pashinyan is actually doing – through his government program approved on August 20 by the Council of Ministers – is declaring the founding of Armenia’s Fourth Republic, effectively annulling the Third Republic’s ideology rooted in the Karabakh movement for the liberation and protection of the Armenian Highlands. As Pashinyan noted in his outline of the five-year government program (2026-2031) for the upcoming period, “There is no logic of the Karabakh movement,” as he described it. All that is left for Armenia now is the “logic of peace.”
Artsakh Lost, Memory Erased
The Armenian highland, or the space of the Armenian ancestral home, is Artsakh, or the space of Nagorno-Karabakh. In September 2023, it was lost by Pashinyan, as 100,000 ethnic Armenians in Artsakh were forced to flee their homes within days by an Azerbaijan military attack that was launched without any resistance from Pashinyan. A peace framework was later signed with Baku by Pashinyan. The framework amounted to nothing but Armenia’s formal acquiescence to and recognition of the ethnic cleansing of Artsakh’s indigenous Christian population. The framework is now to be formally buried by Pashinyan’s government program together with any moral reckoning of how Artsakh was lost.
Targeting The Catholicos — Destroying The Church
Attacking Armenia’s Christian identity is more than just to attempt to take territory. New government program’s first political objective is to remove Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians His Holiness Karekin II from his seat, and replace him with a new Catholicos, who will be under Pashinyan’s and his new, secular government’s, control. The same thing happened in Ukraine.
The Armenian Apostolic Church, which was founded by the two Apostles Thaddaeus and Bartholomew in the 1st century, is being treated as a political entity, to be managed and restructured by Pashinyan’s and his Brussels-minded government.
Mount Ararat Removed From The Passport
Armenia is not just being destroyed politically under Pashinyan. He has already attempted to destroy Armenia’s Christian identity on several occasions. For example, he erased Mount Ararat from the Armenian passport. The mountain is a symbol of the Armenian people’s Christian faith. The mountain is located in modern day Turkey, but for the Armenian people it is a symbol of their ancestors and of their return to their homeland. This is why the image of Mount Ararat was on every Armenian’s passport. But Pashinyan and his Government have removed it. And when the Diaspora attempted to protest against this outrageous decision, Pashinyan simply ignored them. And when the Church attempted to protest against this decision, Pashinyan attempted to escalate the situation even further.
Reelection By Manipulation
Pashinyan was reelected to the post of Prime Minister in June 2026. The vote for the Prime Minister of Armenia was, in the words of Armenia Alliance opposition leader, former President of Armenia, Robert Kocharyan, in a few words – “pressure on the Central Election Commission and usurpation of power” by the current PM. In reality, the May 2026 early elections in Armenia had been, as is being presently said by a multitude of sources, including in the diaspora, “manipulated” and won by PM Pashinyan. The results of the vote were “validated” by the majority of Western observers.
Dismantling The Russian Alliance, Opening To Brussels
The attack on Armenia’s Christian identity is occurring in a geo-political context. Under Pashinyan, Armenia’s defense relationship with Russia has been systematically dismantled. In January this year, Armenia withdrew from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), the Russian-led collective security bloc. Armenian Defense Minister Suren Karapetyan stated that Armenia would focus on its partnership with the EU. Pashinyan’s government is rapidly deepening ties with the EU, even allowing French and EU civilian monitoring missions to be deployed on Armenian soil. A total of 11 historic monuments and dozens of crosses were destroyed in Artsakh. The ancient churches, monasteries, cross-stones (khachkars) and other historic monuments in the territories of Artsakh, which are under the control of Azerbaijan, remain without an official word from Pashinyan as to their fate. No word from the EU either.
The Liquidation Of A Civilization
Armenia is not going through political change; it is slowly but deliberately being wiped out as a civilization. Pashinyan’s new program is a betrayal of the highest order for a government that has just declared that the Third Republic is over and that a “Fourth Republic” is being born – a “Fourth Republic” that does not have room for the founders of the Third Republic, i.e. for the millions of Armenians who risked their lives and freedom during the Karabakh movement. A government that has just declared that removing His Holiness from the post of the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians is a political objective, is deliberately attempting to liquidate the Armenian Apostolic Church – a Church that goes back to the first century of Christianity, i.e. to the time of the Apostles. In short, Pashinyan’s globalist project does not just demand the implementation of trade agreements and of regulatory frameworks – it demands the most important thing of all: the surrender of one’s identity. And in Armenia, the surrender of identity is now official government policy.
