Armenian Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan arrived in Moscow today for a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov, as the situation worsens in Nagorno-Karabakh for Armenian forces fighting the Azeri incursion into the disputed territory.
Armenian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Anna Naghdalyan informed the Armenpress news agency, “In Moscow, a meeting between Armenian Minister of Foreign Affairs Zohrab Mnatsakanyan and Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov is planned. They plan to discuss the situation in the Karabakh conflict zone and the implementation of ceasefire agreements.”
Reports from the battlefield show success for Azeri columns heading to the border with Armenia to Nagorno-Karabakh, and a high likelihood of total victory in the ‘frozen conflict’ of the Soviet Union.
The video below is a good primer on what is happening on the ground.
Russian President Vladimir Putin seems agnostic to the loss of territory by the Armenian Christians in NK. The democratic government in Armenia has made overtures to the West, which is the original sin for former Soviet republics in Putin’s eyes. The Russian leader will likely shed no tears to see new leadership installed in Yerevan, which is what is likely to happen if Armenia loses the conflict.
Delegations from both sides will meet with U.S. Secretary of State Pompeo Friday in Washington, D.C. as The White House looks to be peacemaker once again. Azerbaijan will likely be ready to cement territorial gains in any negotiations.
