The long-range drone campaign of Ukraine continued overnight of September 25, and reached deep into Russian territory, and with a big surprise: one of Russia’s ten largest oil refineries, more than 1,500 km from the front, was attacked by Ukraine. At the same time, the Russian army continued to hit drone production facilities and the supply lines of the drones in Ukraine.
On the night of September 25, Ukraine attacked one of the biggest oil refineries in Russia — Lukoil-Permnefteorgsintez (PNOS) refinery located in Perm Krai in the industrial heart of Russia. According to information provided by the government of Perm region overnight a massive UAV attack occurred at an industrial facility. Footage published by the Ukrainian monitoring channels shows a fire at the AVT-5 crude distillation unit of the refinery. As previously reported, the same refinery was attacked by Ukraine in August.
In addition to the Lukoil refinery, several other sites were struck, including the Novoshakhtinsk refinery in Rostov Oblast, the only refinery in the region with a capacity of 5.6 mln tons per year. Yuri Slyusar, governor of Rostov Region, said that the drone attacks on the refinery had caused serious damage and that the refinery had been suspended from operations. In total, Slyusar said that around 50 drones had been involved in the attacks on Rostov Region. The Iskra Plant, part of Russia’s Almaz-Antey defense manufacturer, had also been attacked, with Alexei Russkikh, the governor of Ulyanovsk Region, reporting that eight people had been injured in the attacks, including a child. Russkikh said that there had been serious damage to industrial and civilian infrastructure.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, within the space of one night, 592 fixed-wing UAVs were shot down by Russian air defenses in over 20 regions of Russia including the Moscow area. Not all drones launched by Ukraine were shot down, however.
Meanwhile, Russia launched a massive strike on Ukraine. All in all, the Russian Aerospace Forces attacked the drone assembly and storage facilities of Fire Point LLC (Boryspol near Kyiv) with Honeywell TFE731 engines (produced in the US) for Ukrainian Flamingo long-range cruise missiles, as well as two logistics centers in Odessa and Nerubayskoye that stored the military cargo supplied by Europe, as well as the port infrastructure and 3 military warehouses in the Reni port, and 5 ships in the Black Sea that were used by the Ukrainian side.
The defense ministry earlier described the overnight attacks in terms of “strikes against enterprises of the military-industrial complex and logistics centers, as well as naval vessels used by the Ukrainian side”.
The ongoing fighting was marked by an industrial-scale exchange of strikes, with nearly 600 drones launched by Ukraine. Russia hit in equal measure, in a dozen or so categories of targets, including drone production facilities. Meanwhile, diplomats were meeting at the United Nations in New York.
