We have written extensively about Russia providing aid to North Korea in the face of United States pressure against the North’s nuclear program, and China’s help in attempting to slow its development. The latest example of this Russia assistance is a new internet connection from the Russian Far East to Pyongyang. The new line by a Putin-connected telecom company has already taken over the majority of traffic and supplements the Chinese access, in case China attempts to further isolate Pyongyang.

The connection, from TransTeleCom, began appearing in Internet routing databases at 09:08 UTC on Sunday, or around 17:38 Pyongyang time on Sunday evening, reported the North Korean think tank 38North.org.

TransTelecom issued a statement on the matter, “TransTeleCom (TTK) has historically had a connection to the communication network of North Korea under the agreement with Korea Posts and Telecommunications Corp, which was signed in 2009.”
