German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilkham Aliyev in Baku on Saturday offered to help solve the long-standing ‘frozen conflict’ of the Soviet Union in Central Asia – Nagorno-Karabakh. The move seems to be a play to get German access to commodity rights and business contracts in the region blessed with natural resources.

“We are talking about the issue, which hinders this region very much. This is the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and we, on the part of Germany, would like to render support in resolving it,” Merkel said.

The German chancellor also said that Azerbaijan and Germany could expand their economic ties.

“We can expand ties in the economic sphere and Azerbaijan is Germany’s largest trade partner in this region,” Merkel stressed, reported Russian state news agency TASS.

The conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia has remained unsolved since the early 1990s and occasionally bursts into a hot war between the two former Soviet Republics over the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh.
