Russian President Vladimir Putin has been pushing to diversify the Russian economy away from hydrocarbons and hi-tech is one are where he sees possible bright lights for the future. The Kremlin just backed an effort to invest $100 million in block chain technology and is also focused heavily on artificial intelligence.
While speaking to students in Moscow today, Putin said AI provides “colossal opportunities and threats that are difficult to predict now…the one who becomes the leader in this sphere will be the ruler of the world,” reported Associated Press.
The Russian president said “it would be strongly undesirable if someone wins a monopolist position” while promising to not keep Russia’s knowledge close-hold, but would share with other nations.
“When one party’s drones are destroyed by drones of another, it will have no other choice but to surrender.” This comment shows the Kremlin sees AI as a national security issue. Drone technology and the ability of drones to select targets without human interaction is a priority for the Kremlin.
