In his new book, The Invisible Walls of Dannemora – Inside the Infamous Clinton Correctional Facility, former corrections officer Michael Blaine provides a unique insight into the New York prison system. The book is an easy-to-read, entertaining, and descriptive account of his life as a New York State Correction Officer, where he served as a Sergeant and later a Lieutenant, working in the State’s largest and most notorious prison, the Clinton Correctional Facility. The Dannemora prison has a fascinating history, having housed some of the most infamous criminals any single facility could possibly possess, the likes of mobster Charlie “Lucky” Luciano, “Son of Sam” David Berkowitz, Rappers Tupac Shakur, and Ol’ Dirty Bastard, and countless others.

It is the inspirational story of a young man, fresh off the farm, with a clear sense of right and wrong, who refuses to compromise his principles. From the very first chapter, the reader is introduced to the people Blaine met on his journey who would later prove responsible for the first successful escape in 2015 from the Clinton Correctional Facility when convicted murderers David Sweat and Richard Matt led authorities on one of the largest manhunts in state history. There are other books on the market that simply talk about the infamous escape in 2015 and others about the prison’s history, but this book is the only true look inside the inner workings of the facility, which reveals the underlying conditions that made the escape possible.

Blaine gives first-hand accounts of his interactions with the inmates. In the pages of his book, the reader experiences what it is like to be in the midst of a prison riot, fire a warning shot over the prison yard, and engage with violent prisoners who only want to harm the staff. He is also careful to reveal examples of the respect and humanity that exists between those on opposite sides of the bars. As you read his account, you come to realize that a prison is a complete, contained city with the inmates being the inhabitants.

Blaine cites observations of preferential treatment of staff based on race, especially early on in his career. As the story progresses, he talks about how gender and sexuality were used as weapons against him when he reported the misconduct of staff members who had filed false allegations against him. The prison Superintendent, who had been friends with the author, refused to investigate and interview eyewitnesses that would clear him. Blaine shows how such actions empowered the offenders and emboldened them to the point of actually assaulting him in front of eyewitnesses. You can feel the pain that Blaine experienced as he learns the meaning of the phrase, “Protected Class of Person.” Only a strong individual of faith could have survived such an ordeal in an already stressful and difficult environment infected with political correctness.

BOOK REVIEW: The Invisible Walls Of Dannemora

In addition to his time at Clinton, where he spent the bulk of his career, Blaine also discusses his experiences at other facilities where he served. Despite his being marked for retaliation by superiors, he persevered. The instances of corruption and the unequal applications of discipline for staff for offenses might shock the reader. The Invisible Walls of Dannemora contains the good, the bad, and the incredibly ugly sides of the New York State Prison system. The information regarding how the changes in the societal and political environments that helped make the infamous escape possible is jaw-dropping.

The same system that tried to devour one of their own for merely defending himself, refused to learn from its mistakes in not addressing staff misconduct issues due to considerations of political correctness. What Blaine experienced back then has now tragically become acceptable in today’s society; different rules for different races, genders, and sexual orientations.

This book has even more to offer. Blaine reflects on his side-career as a professional Hypnotist career and how he utilized his skills on those around him. The instances of humor, both on and off duty, and how his skills as a hypnotist played a significant role in his life make the book all the more entertaining. This is not your typical law enforcement autobiography.

Blaine’s book should serve as a source of inspiration for those who feel defeated, afraid, and alone in their darkest hours. He stood up for what is right, even when the deck was clearly stacked against him, only to be targeted for his refusal to simply accept the mistreatment and go about his way. The Invisible Walls of Dannemora is a must-read for anyone interested in the inner working of the prison system, as well as the causes of the famous 2015 escape. The book is published by Histria Books and is available at histriabooks.com and all major book retailers.
