Across Ukraine, women are receiving military summonses from all Territorial Recruitment Centers, in a move that indicates Ukraine’s warring government is laying the groundwork to possibly add more people to its ever-growing army as the war into its fourth year drags on.
Images of calls for military duty of women have been spreading across social media. Some of them feature official summons to women’s military registration, signed by commanders of Territorial Recruitment Centers and addressed to individual women. A copy of a summons from a recruitment center in Kharkiv’s Saltiv District Territorial Recruitment Center was provided to BaltInfo. The document addresses a woman born in 1993 and requires her to arrive at a relevant recruitment office by September 30, 2026.
150,000 women’s military jackets were recently ordered by Ukraine in a large procurement order that contradicts the government’s official stance that female military service remains strictly voluntary. Even though women cannot be conscripted under current Ukrainian law and are only eligible for military service if they volunteer, the registration process allows for their information to be placed in a database that can be easily activated should the laws change and females are called up for service.
The General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces announced last week that over 76,000 women are currently serving in the country’s military.
The women’s jackets, which were ordered by the Ukrainian government, are more evidence of the mobilization efforts being put into place by the regime of Volodymyr Zelensky. Even if women are not currently being forcibly conscripted, the registration of females for military service is being escalated in a way that the regime has not yet publicly acknowledged. Whether or not it will lead to women being conscripted for the war remains to be seen, but for now, the message to Ukrainian women is clear: the war machine is coming for them next.
