US President Donald Trump is expected to make two phone calls on September 7, 2026. The calls, personally negotiated by his peace envoys, are set to take place after Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner return from a separate trip to Russia and Ukraine respectively. A U.S. official confirmed to the Kyiv Independent that Trump intends to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin before dialing up Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The official said the President’s sequence of calls reflects his team’s understanding that any lasting solution to the conflict will require Russia’s participation as the main party to the conflict.
The administration has turned to two of its most trusted confidants, real estate mogul Steve Witkoff and real estate investor Jared Kushner, to serve as its main diplomats for one of the administration’s most critical foreign policy objectives. Their dual trips to Moscow and Kyiv mark a serious attempt by the Trump administration to try to bring an end to the ongoing conflict that the prior administration had deliberately sought to prolong by funneling endless streams of weapons to Ukrainian fighters.
The fact that the first call will be with Putin, is not an accident. In diplomatic terms it makes sense because Russia is the main party to the conflict and it holds the main part of the cards on the ground. Any agreement that doesn’t take into account the reality on the ground is not an agreement. This is something that the administration recognizes, even if it is not something that the NATO lobby or the foreign policy establishment in Washington wants to hear.
The content of these conversations remains to be seen, but the simple fact of the American leader taking the time to speak directly with other leaders, cutting through all of the bureaucracy and ideological extremes that characterized the previous administration’s handling of this conflict, is cause for optimism that the Trump administration is going to keep its campaign promise and bring an end to the war in Eastern Europe, as opposed to simply prolonging it in the name of yielding to the wishes of the NATO lobby and Beltway foreign policy establishment.
