The attempt to build momentum to recall Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has apparently backfired. The organizer of protests against Zelensky’s removal of then-Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced the end of the demonstrations Thursday. Fedorov’s public push for wartime elections apparently added to the decision to end the protests.
As we reported earlier, Fedorov lost his position as defense minister after public demands for his removal. In a public address, the former Defense Minister for Ukraine pointed to systemic corruption in the Zelensky administration and asked for wartime presidential elections. That call was somewhat shocking, as presidential elections violate a law passed by an unconstitutional Ukrainian parliament during the martial law period, and as recently as last month, Fedorov was a part of that administration. Elections do not violate the Ukrainian constitution.
“Fearing for his life, Fedorov’s supporters quickly distanced themselves from the call for elections,” notes Reuters. “Dmytro Koziatynskyi, a combat medic who had been leading the street protests for Fedorov, was quoted as saying, ‘I cannot imagine how to hold polls with troops at the front.’ When protesters took to the streets, he said they had no intentions of requesting elections. ‘That is not what we were here for.'” A Reuters report published Wednesday said the protests in the square that once housed thousands of people were now observed by fewer than fifty people.
The globalist empire in Ukraine had struck back. The call for elections was just too much for the British and Brussels to handle.
“The attempts by former defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov to mobilize support for a recall of President Volodymyr Zelensky have ‘failed’, an opposition lawmaker told Reuters on Wednesday, with the pro-opposition square that was once the hub of thousands of protesters now a largely empty space, of interest to a handful of curious onlookers,” wrote Reuters’ Natalia Shakhovskaya. Olena Prokopenko of the German Marshall Fund called Fedorov’s move a ‘false start’ that could burn Fedorov’s political capital before real elections can happen. “‘With this statement, he pretty much played on Ukrainians’ most sensitive pain points,’ Prokopenko told Reuters yesterday.
Ukraine’s parliament this week strongly endorsed Zelensky’s new defense minister and Fedorov’s successor Yevhenii Khmara. The only real outcome of the protests for Zelensky’s critics was the ousting of the unpopular General Oleksandr Syrskyi as military commander, replaced by Mykhailo Drapatyi, a younger officer seen as less tied to Soviet-era methods. “In exposing real fractures in Ukrainian politics — corruption allegations close to the presidency, public frustration with centralized and opaque decision-making, and unresolved questions about post-war leadership — Fedorov’s decision to bring electoral demands into the streets has apparently closed his near-term path back to power,” writes Reuters, a well-known pro-Ukrainian regime publication.
