In our view, today was a first shot at listing demands from either side. This is how negotiations work.
At the moment, it is known from various sources that during the negotiations in Istanbul, the Russian side put forward strict conditions for a ceasefire:
- complete withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the territory of the Kherson, Zaporizhia regions, the DPR and LPR;
- creation of a security zone in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions.
In case of refusal, the Russian army will not only liberate the parts of the Russian regions controlled by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, but will also forcibly ensure control over the Dnepropetrovsk, Sumy and Kharkiv regions, reported Russian press.
The Ukrainian side is declaring Russian demands are impossible.
In our view, this is going to take time. Ukraine needs to counter with a proposal that deals with their security and priorities.
