A new revelation from the trove of military intelligence documents that were leaked by Jack Teixeira has caused outrage among several Hungarian media outlets after it revealed that Ukraine had been planning to sabotage the Druzhba oil pipeline. The pipeline carries crude from Russia to Hungary.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had proposed to Deputy Prime Minister Yuliya Svyrydenko during a February meeting that Ukraine blow up the pipeline to destroy the portion of the Hungarian infrastructure that relies on Russian oil, according to the leaked documents.
Meanwhile, government spokesman Zoltán Kovács asked in a tweet simply, “How is it possible that Ukraine is plotting against a NATO country??”
Hungarian security analyst Péter Tarjányi took to Facebook to note that the decision to sabotage the pipeline would be a “very unfriendly, mistaken and stupid move.”
“I understand that Ukraine does not like many Hungarian government actions and communications, but this does not justify such a plan or idea,” he added.
Tarjányi went on to say that “on the one hand, Hungary has helped hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees over the past 15 months, despite all the differences of opinion. We have to understand, our country sent aid, medicine AND!!! in the end voted for ALL sanctions against Russia.”

He then concluded that “in addition to this, and this is not a negligible FACT, Hungary is a NATO member, so such a plan makes no sense at all. This is a huge self-deception on the part of Ukraine, and Kyiv must explain itself very quickly. The main question is: Why did the Ukrainian president think that such a plan could be justified???? Why did he think he could risk NATO support by launching such an attack? I await further information on the matter.”
Despite the Russian invasion of Ukraine last year, which greatly reduced the amount of Russian crude imports from Europe, Hungary still imported 4.8 million tons of crude from Russia, which is a 1.4 million increase over its imports in 2021.
