Egypt is one of the top countries in terms of the amount of foreign aid it receives each year from the U.S. According to a State Department fact sheet, “Since 1978, the United States has provided Egypt with over $50 billion in military and $30 billion in economic assistance.”

Given how much foreign aid the U.S. provides to Egypt, it is understandable that the Biden administration was likely furious to learn that one of its allies, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, was covertly planning to ship tens of thousands of rockets to Moscow as the Kremlin continues its war in Ukraine.

The discovery came after a large amount of classified Pentagon files were leaked online in recent months. According to the Washington Post, Sisi recently ordered the covert shipment of up to 40,000 rockets to Russia.

The February 17 top secret leaked document, is allegedly a summarization of conversations between Sisi and his top military officials during which artillery rounds and gunpowder are discussed.

The document outlines instructions from Sis to military officials to keep the production and shipment of the rockets quiet “to avoid problems with the West.”

It would not only be highly embarrassing for a U.S. ally like Egypt to be caught sending weapons to Moscow, but it would also likely bring U.S. sanctions down upon Cairo, or at least the withdrawal or freezing of Washinton’s defense aid, Zerohedge reported.

The trove of classified material was originally posted to Discord in February and March.

As would be expected, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry has denied the document’s contents with Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid saying, “Egypt’s position from the beginning is based on noninvolvement in this crisis and committing to maintain equal distance with both sides, while affirming Egypt’s support to the U.N. charter and international law in the U.N. General Assembly resolutions.”

While it is commonly known that Ukrainian forces are burning through munitions faster than allies can supply them, some have taken the Egyptian rockets shipment as an indication that Russian forces may also be facing military supply shortages, or perhaps are anticipating a depletion of artillery and other ammunition as the war in Ukraine drags on into its second year.
