As Ukrainians Go To The Polls, Poroshenko Faces Defeat

Tomorrow Ukrainians go to the polls to select their new president; upstart candidate, and reality TV star/comedian Volodymyr Zelensky is the favorite in a possible overwhelming defeat of sitting President Petro Poroshenko.

Political satirist Volodymyr Zelenskiy gets 72.7 percent of support among the decided voters who say they will come to the polling stations on April 21, while incumbent President Petro Poroshenko receives 27.2 percent, reported The Kyiv Post from a recent poll.

According to the final opinion polls, comic actor Zelensky is the clear frontrunner, with forecasts giving him something like 70 percent of votes. His performance during a televised debate Friday in a 70,000 seater stadium in Kiev appears to have done nothing to dent his chances. From the stage he proclaimed himself a “ordinary person” who has “come to destroy the system.” Even his well-publicised ties to Ukrainian billionaire Ihor Kolomoyskyi have not harmed his image. At the end of Friday’s debate, Poroshenko was booed by the audience, wrote Russian news outlet The Bell.

A consequence of the election could be a change in Kyiv’s stance towards the war in Donbass and towards the Kremlin in general.
