Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó traveled to Brussels and Strasbourg on Wednesday to discuss the Zelensky regime’s oppression of the Hungarian minority living in the Transcarpathia region now occupied by Ukraine with European officials.

With his first stop at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, Szijjarto wrote on his Facebook page, “The European Court of Human Rights is often the last resort, when it comes to violations. We hope that we can count on the correct attitude of the board regarding the protection of minority rights because due to the regulations coming into force in Ukraine, minority schools will be practically abolished from September and the right to learn in the native language will continue to be harmed.”

The Hungarian Foreign Minister explained that his government did not broach the issue immediately due to the conflict in Ukraine but that the worsening situation of minorities living under the Zelensky regime has forced the issue. “When war broke out next door, we decided not to mention the case of violations of rights against national communities,” Szijjártó wrote, but “Unfortunately, in Ukraine, a new law was recently adopted, which further restricts minority rights. Protecting the rights and improving the situation of the Hungarian community in Transcarpathian are on the agenda of the Strasbourg negotiations today.”

If we receive news of more and more atrocities and the legal situation deteriorates further, we have to take action on all forums

Szijjártó’s next stop was Brussels where he discussed the issue of repression of ethnic minorities at the Council of Europe. “Following the Hungarian-Romanian initiative, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe addressed the Venice Committee on the issue of minority regulation in Ukraine. The chairman of the committee has now informed [us] that the requested opinion will be ready by the beginning of June!,” he reported

Concerned that Ukraine is in fact using the war as a pretext to pursue a policy of ethnic cleaning, Szijjártó wrote, “Certain questions cannot be put in final brackets even the war. In recent years, we have regularly discussed with the Secretary-General of the Council of Europe, as the institutions of this organization are specifically designed to guarantee the respect of minority rights. Today, in order to protect the rights of Hungarians in Transcarpathia, we have to sit back to the table with Secretary-General Marija Pejčinović, because if we receive news of more and more atrocities and the legal situation deteriorates further, we have to take action on all forums.”
