Ukraine has managed to upset most of Eastern Europe with the passage of a new law requiring all education in Ukraine to be taught in Ukrainian. President Pedro Poroshenko signed the bill into law Monday. Hungary, Romania, Moldova, and Russia are unhappy with the measure, with Hungary threatening to prevent Ukraine from joining the European Union.
“Poroshenko said in a statement on Monday that the law “strengthens the role of the Ukrainian language in education” but also protects the rights of all minorities to get education,” reported AP.
Putin Warns West To Not Supply Weapons To Ukraine
There are about 150,000 ethnic Hungarians in Ukraine. The Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto on Tuesday called Poroshenko’s signing of the law “a shame and a disgrace.”
“We guarantee that all this will be painful for Ukraine in the future.”

The Hungarian Human Resources Ministry said, “Ukraine’s leadership is steering its own country not toward Europe, but toward a dead end.”
The conflict in Eastern Ukraine had its roots in the Russian speaking people of the region. Russia has used the issue of Russian speaking people’s in former Soviet territory as a reason to support separatist movements. The Crimean peninsula, the Transdniester region of Moldova, and Abkhazia, South Ossetia in Georgia are all examples of this strategy.
