A massive Ukrainian arms depot in Kalynivka, central Vinnytsia region, exploded today in what Ukrainian authorities believe was an act of sabotage. The site stored heavy weapons ammunition and air defense missiles. Luckily only two people were injured and none were killed. It is the second Ukrainian arms storage area to blow up this year. In March, a depot burned and exploded in the eastern town of Balakliya.

“This is the arsenal of the Ukrainian army, and I think it was no accident that it was destroyed,” said Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman who was sent by President Petro Poroshenko to visit the site and report back on the situation.

30,000 people around the site were evacuated and, “In addition, 180 patients were evacuated from Vinnytsia area hospitals,” Ukraine’s emergency ministry said, reported AFP.

“People suffered heavy damage,” a local resident who gave just the name Antonina told AFP. “Some homes had their windows and doors completely blown out,” she said.

The Ukrainian military has opened an investigation into “sabotage at a military facility.”

President Poroshenko held an emergency meeting with military commanders and said, “We have to learn to defend our strategic facilities from sabotage groups…We will no longer put up with these events.”
