Russian Universities Rise Again In International Rankings

Russian President Vladimir Putin has made a special push in recent years to keep Russian students at home after they graduate and to increase the effectiveness of Russian university education. The 2017 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject published on Tuesday, shows Russian universities increasing their rankings again, especially in certain areas.

Putin made a personal appeal to Russian students last year to stay home after graduation, not emigrate abroad, and help Mother Russia.

The Lomonosov Moscow State University has achieved the best ever results, featuring in the top 50 for 7 subjects and was ranked number 13 in the world for linguistics, or up from last year’s 17th place. Apart from that it is ranked 21st for physics and astronomy, 33rd for mathematics, 40th for natural sciences, 43rd for hospitality and leisure management, 44th for modern languages, and 48th for computer science.

The St. Petersburg State Mining University is in the top 50 for mineral and mining engineering having taken the 15th place, although last year it was ranked among universities from 51st to 100th places. The National University of Science and Technology MISIS took the 31st place in the same category. The Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory was ranked 41st for performing arts.

The Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT/Moscow Polytech) took the 42nd place in physics and astronomy. The Novosibirsk State University took the 50th place in the same category, reports Russian state news agency TASS.

28 Russian universities appear in this year’s ranking, increasing their presence in the ranking from last year’s 0.82% to 1.03%
