Today, the current president of Georgia, Giorgi Margvelashvili congratulated Donald Trump on his inauguration and expressed hope for deepening cooperation with the US.
“The United States has always been a beacon of independence for other countries and the main support for the stability and peace in the world. Considering the complex environment and challenges we face, I am sure that you will perform a crucial role in creating a more secure, peaceful and prosperous world.” – Reads the publication on the website of the presidential administration.
“We are thankful and appreciate the support of the United States of America in strengthening our statehood and democratic development, as well as for your unwavering position with respect to Georgia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations,” Margvelashvili’s statement reads.
Margvelashvili invited President Trump to Georgia “at any time convenient” for the new president. “I have a strong desire for and expect further deepening of our strategic partnership. I am sure that through our joint efforts the friendship of Georgia and the United States will further be deepened and strengthened in the future,” Margvelashvili said.
At the same time, the President of Georgia expressed his gratitude for the US assistance in the construction of the Georgian state. “Our historical friendship irreversible: our peoples fought together with a variety of challenges”, “We are grateful and appreciate the support of the United States to strengthen our statehood and democratic development.”
Current Relations
Georgia and the United States established diplomatic relations on April 23, 1992. The countries are actively cooperating in the spheres of defense, security, economy and education. In January 2009, in Washington, Georgia, and the US signed the Charter on Strategic Partnership. The document envisages expansion of partnership and cooperation in the field of defense and security, economy and energy, democratic reforms, diplomacy and culture.
