120,000 Armenians, mostly Christian, are being ethnically cleansed by Azeri Muslim forces in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Officials in Stepanakert, the Armenian stronghold city of Nagorno-Karabakh, a disputed region between Armenia and Azerbaijan, sent a letter requesting help to President Putin over a week ago and have not received a response.
Five days ago, Russian President Putin said, “I hope the situation will be peacefully resolved.”
The images of thousands of Armenians being marched from their homes with literally nothing has shocked the world, as memories of the Armenian Genocide by the Muslim Ottoman Empire still permeate the area. Over a million Christians were executed by Ottoman forces a century ago.
Russians are now writing on social media that Russia betrayed Armenia.
President Putin, who has carefully built an image at home and in the West as a Christian leader, and protector of Christians in Russia’s ‘near abroad’, is being criticized for the development.
Many analysts have reported Putin allowed the atrocity to ensue because Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan went too far in his courtship of Western governments.
