The ‘frozen conflict’ from the fall of the Soviet Union — Transdniester, on the border of Ukraine and Moldova, has long been a flash point since the civil war of the early 1990s, where Moldovan forces fought Kremlin-backed elements and hundreds were killed. 2,500 Russian ‘peace keepers’ have been stationed there ever since, guarding a massive Soviet ammunition dump.

The region is now front and center again, as the Ukraine conflict gets hotter.

Today Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean declared that Moscow was soon to deploy 10,000 troops to the region to ensure a ‘pro-Kremlin government.

If peace is not found in Ukraine soon, Russia could work to ‘take the Odessa region’ of Ukraine and link up with Transdniester.

Now the importance of the recent stolen election in Romania comes into focus. NATO is building the largest NATO base to date in Romania, to protect the alliance’s access and influence over the Black Sea, long a Soviet/Russian sphere.
