Russia’s lunar space craft Luna-25 crashed while attempting to land on the Moon in Russia’s first mission of its type in 47 years.
Roskosmos, the Kremlin’s space agency, put out a statement saying, “Measures taken on August 19 and 20 to locate the craft and make contact with it were unsuccessful
“The apparatus move into an unpredictable orbit and ceased to exist as a result of a collision with the surface of the Moon.
“During the operation, an abnormal situation occurred on board the automatic station, which did not allow the manoeuvre to be performed with the specified parameters … Communication with Luna-25 was lost at 11:57 GMT on Saturday,” Roskosmos reported in a statement.
Luna-25 was to stay on the Moon’s surface for a year, collecting soil samples and looking for water, to possible make rocket fuel for future missions.
India is to attempt a landing on August 23, reported Times of India.
