Joe Biden ordered the bombing of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines renowned investigative journalist Seymour Hersh wrote on his Substack account. Hersh rose to prominence during the Vietnam War by exposing the My Lai Massacre and its coverup, for which he received the Pulitzer Prize in 1970.
Hersh’s reporting shows that Biden and his advisors secretly planned this act of aggression against Russia long before Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. “The Biden Administration was doing everything possible to avoid leaks as the planning took place late in 2021 and into the first months of 2022,” he wrote. The motive for the attack was that “As long as Europe remained dependent on the pipelines for cheap natural gas, Washington was afraid that countries like Germany would be reluctant to supply Ukraine with the money and weapons it needed to defeat Russia.”
Hersh reports that divers from the U.S. Navy’s Diving and Salvage Center in Panama City, Florida, carried out the mission: “Last June, the Navy divers, operating under the cover of a widely publicized mid-summer NATO exercise known as BALTOPS 22, planted the remotely triggered explosives that, three months later, destroyed three of the four Nord Stream pipelines, according to a source with direct knowledge of the operational planning.”

The explosions were reported on September 28, 2022, causing massive gas bubbles to erupt from the Baltic Sea polluting the atmosphere. The result of the attack was one of the worst industrial methane accidents in history, causing serious environmental damage. The Biden Administration had publicly threatened for months to disable the pipelines and immediately after the explosion, Radek Sikorski, former Polish Defense Minister, suggested that the United States carried out the attack. The Biden team, however, quickly implemented a disinformation campaign suggesting that Russia blew up its own pipelines.
Hersh recounts the logistics of the U.S. attack in substantial detail. “On September 26, 2022, a Norwegian Navy P8 surveillance plane made a seemingly routine flight and dropped a sonar buoy. The signal spread underwater, initially to Nord Stream 2 and then on to Nord Stream 1,” he writes. “A few hours later, the high-powered C4 explosives were triggered and three of the four pipelines were put out of commission. Within a few minutes, pools of methane gas that remained in the shuttered pipelines could be seen spreading on the water’s surface and the world learned that something irreversible had taken place.”
The White House and the CIA both deny Hersh’s story calling it false. But NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden chimed in on Twitter in response to the story, “Can you think of any examples from history of a secret operation that the White House was responsible for, but strongly denied? Besides, you know, that little ‘mass surveillance’ kerfuffle.”
