Not even a week after an errant Ukrainian air-defense missile landed in Poland killing 2 people along the border with Ukraine, Germany has provided Poland with a US-made Patriot air-defense system for its border.

According to German Defense Minister, Christine Lambrecht, “Poland is our friend, ally and stands out as a neighbor of Ukraine.” The deal is also unexpected as Poland recently put its losses from World War II at $1.3 trillion and has demanded the same in reparations from Germany. Poland’s top officials have also been critical of German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz for not making a larger commitment regarding arming Ukraine.
Despite the differences, however, Germany has stepped up to defend its ally and provide Poland with some kind of protection as a war between Ukraine and Russia continues across its southeastern border.
