Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet with Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov today in Moscow.
The Chechen has formally asked the Kremlin to step down from his role running the Chechen Republic where he has kept the peace for Putin since the Chechen wars of the 1990s.
Tsarizm has travelled and spent time in the region and Grozny, the capital, is kept operating by massive Kremlin funding, in order to calm Islamic tensions.
However, most Chechens, if asked in private, would like to be independent, and many still hold resentment from the conflicts against Moscow decades ago.
“I’ve heard those rumors (about resignation), too. They say all sorts of things. On the contrary, I am asking to be dismissed from my post,” Kadyrov said. “I hope that my request will be supported,” said Kadyrov.
This is not the first time Kadyrov has asked for his resignation. He made similar statements in 2016, 2017, and 2022, according to the independent Russian media outlet Astra. In previous cases, his resignation was not approved, reported the Kyiv Post.
“No matter how much I ask, only our Supreme Commander-in-Chief, Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, decides,” Kadyrov wrote on Telegram. “I’m a foot soldier! I’m a team player. If I’m ordered, I’ll follow.”
The Chechen leader has been rumored over the years to have health problems.
