Ukraine Promises Reforms By 2020 To Join NATO

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko used a meeting with NATO Secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg to push again for NATO membership. The Ukrainian leader declared Kyiv will enact reforms by 2020 to get in a position to be accepted by the alliance, saying will “have a clear schedule of what must be done by 2020 to meet the NATO membership criteria,” reported Reuters.

“Ukraine has clearly defined its political future and its future in the sphere of security,” Poroshenko speaking to reporters alongside Stoltenberg.

“Today we clearly stated that we would begin a discussion about a membership action plan and our proposals for such a discussion were accepted with pleasure.”

Support for joining NATO has risen sharply since the conflict with pro-Russian rebels in the east, 69% of Ukrainians now support becoming a member.
