Czech Prime Minister To Decide On New Finance Minister

Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka recently demanded the resignation of Finance Minister Andrej Babis over corruption issues as is his prerogative. Although he denied the accusations, Babis recommended Alena Schillerova, a deputy, to replace him. Sobotka’s party has rejected this recommendation as Schillerova might hamper the investigations into alleged Babis tax evasion and other charges. Sobotka has declared he will give his answer on the replacement tomorrow.

“Tomorrow morning, before the government session, there will be a coalition meeting. I will tell (Babis’ party) ANO my stance regarding their nomination for the finance ministry,” Sobotka said on his official Twitter account, reports Reuters.

Czech President Milos Zeman has stated he would accept Schillerova but the prime minister nominates officials and the president accepts or declines under Czech law.

The issue is being raised prior to elections in October where the party in power under Sobotka is trailing the opposition by ten points in current polls.
