U.S. President Donald Trump will receive Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, in the Oval Office tomorrow. The meeting will start at 10:30am EST.
American Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow earlier in the year, after a period of suspense where the meeting was doubtful. Tillerson and Lavrov will also meet to work on issues facing the two countries such as Syria, Ukraine, and the War of Terror.
From Washington, Lavrov is expected to go to Fairbanks, Alaska, where he will take part in a ministerial meeting of the Arctic Council. He visit to the U.S. will continue through to May 11, reports Russian state news agency TASS.
The political environment in the United States, which Russia has called a ‘witch hunt’ to find evidence of Russian and Trump campaign collusion in the campaign for president in November of last year, has hampered the two sides from being more proactive in finding a solution to the myriad of problems facing both governments.
The issue was reignited today after President Trump fired FBI Director Comey over the way he handled the email scandal with Hillary Clinton during the election. Democrats are now accusing the White House of ‘Nixonian’ tactics over the firing, even though no evidence exists of the collusion allegations.
