President Donald Trump told the press on Wednesday that he is willing to hold another summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate a “genuine peace deal” regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine.
“Of course he’d like to,” Trump said. “But I’d like to have a peace deal first. Russia has a great piece of land and very valuable land. We could do a summit immediately, but I don’t want to do a summit until the war is ending, and I think we will end the war.”
Trump’s last in-person meeting with Putin took place in Alaska last August. Since then the war in Ukraine has continued on the front lines. On Tuesday there were 12 civilian casualties from shelling in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky admitted in an interview published on Tuesday that Kyiv had agreed to several conditions proposed by the United States with the aim of ceasing drone attacks against Moscow and St. Petersburg on specific dates. However, he stressed that the Ukrainian military continued to repel Russian attacks on the country’s territories during the declared pauses in hostilities. Zelensky also said that Ukraine had granted a pause in the conflict in its airspace towards Vladivostok at the request of a third major power.
Trump believes the conflict would not have started while he was in his first term. He is more disposed to deal-making than open-ended conflict, endless military aid, and ever-increasing sanctions pushed by the European globalist consensus.
In a separate development, South Korean intelligence officials told lawmakers on Wednesday that signs of a possible U.S.-North Korea dialogue are emerging. Trump’s efforts to broker peace deals on multiple fronts mark a significant shift in American diplomatic posture. There is no word yet on when or where Trump might meet with Putin to discuss Ukraine.
