The Russian Embassy in Berlin warned on Friday that German military bases, which are to host long-range missile systems, will become targets for the Russian Armed Forces should the German advanced strike weapons program go into effect.
A statement published by Russian newspaper Izvestia on Friday contained a warning by the Russian Embassy in Berlin in relation to the German advanced strike weapons program that Germany is planning to develop. According to the statement by the Embassy’s diplomats, the warning is related to one of the biggest military modernization programs in Germany’s recent history.
“Bases where Germany will deploy new long-range systems will inevitably become legitimate military targets for the Russian armed forces,” the Russian embassy in Berlin wrote on Friday in a message to the newspaper Izvestia, in which diplomats of the embassy comment on the German military.
Germany is developing its missile program in partnership with France and the United Kingdom. For Germany, lacking nuclear weapons, the only way to create sufficient deterrence is to equip itself with the most advanced precision missiles and, above all, long-range drones. European media reports on German defense documents state that the missile program is to be budgeted at approximately €12 billion. The first models are to go into action by 2027, followed by the highly advanced models of hypersonic missiles by the early 2030s.
This warning comes a day after Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that his government was preparing a new package of sanctions against Russia over a drone incident in the German city of Leipzig. Finnish President Alexander Stubb wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that NATO had found no evidence of a Russian state role in the drone attack on a fuel depot in the German city of Leipzig.
Germany’s military buildup has caused considerable concern in Moscow. It is also causing considerable concern and even fault lines within the German domestic politics. The transformation from a defense underfunded for years to become one of the biggest spenders on defense in record time is not going down smoothly. Russia’s embassy in Berlin clearly states that Germany is not a mere rear-base for other NATO member countries. It is a front-line country in the military conflict with Russia.
