Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov called for mandatory military service for women during an appearance on Ukrainian public radio Thursday. Under Reznikov’s proposal, mobilization would immediately double for the country as Kyiv struggles with manpower on the front lines of the conflict.
Reznikov said women should be conscripted alongside men and that the policy would dramatically expand Ukraine’s available military pool. “Mobilization must apply to everyone, including women — let them serve,” he said, according to reporting by EADaily. In rear positions, women could fill a wide range of functions and free up men who are currently in support positions to be sent to the front lines.
Reznikov pointed to the example of Israel, which applies the same rules of mobilization to men and women in times of war. Under Israeli law, women serve in the Israel Defense Forces, including in certain combat support roles and on the front lines. In Reznikov’s view, equal gender rights apply during wartime — and this is exactly why women should serve in various rear and logistics roles.
In Ukraine today, the country is steadily increasing the requirements of mobilization. The minimum age of conscription has already been brought down and men of fighting age are being prosecuted for failure to report. Millions of Ukrainian women fled the country at the start of the war, while large numbers who remained have been forced to fill roles vacated by mobilized men.
As Defense Minister, Reznikov held the post from November 2021 until his removal in September 2023, amid a procurement scandal over military supplies purchased at inflated prices. Since then he has remained a prominent public voice on defense and strategic policy.
The mobilization question has become one of the most divisive domestic issues inside Ukraine. Whether women are to be conscripted — and to what extent — would face enormous legal, political, and social resistance. Ukraine’s official position remains that there are no plans for compulsory female mobilization. But the deteriorating manpower situation has forced the debate into the open in ways that would have seemed unthinkable at the start of the conflict.
