Syrian President al-Sharaa arrived in Moscow today to meet with Russian President Putin.
There is much to discuss — primarily Syria wants the extradition to stand trial of former Syrian President Bashar Assad. Assad is accused of crimes against humanity for brutality against his own people, and war crimes in the Syrian civil war. This extradition is not going to happen; it would make Russia look weak in the eyes of the world. Assad protected Russian forces in Syria for years. Moscow now protects the Assad family in Moscow.
What is likely are discussions on Russian forces building up their presence again in Syria. This ‘ask’ is touchy because the Syrian government is controlled by Turkey, a frenemy of Moscow, and to an extent the United States.
What is certain is that Trump wants peace in the region and that peace is already being threatened again in Gaza as extremists on both sides push to reignite the fighting.
Israel continues to bomb elements of the Syrian army and military facilities to prevent a build up of Syrian forces and to prevent Turkey from establishing a foothold militarily in Syria.
Russia wants to regain influence in the Middle East. So, a lot is on the table for the meeting.
