Russia is being deliberate about its response to the U.S. securing a commitment from Ukrainian President Zelenskiy to implement a 30 day ceasefire. The Kremlin is likely not going to accept such an offer as there is no upside to such a deal without a change in the Ukrainian government and a move towards neutrality.
Russia may as well keep fighting.
However, it is likely there will be back-channel conversations to figure out a way to build on the proposal that may benefit Russia towards something the Kremlin could agree to.
Today the U.S. Director of the CIA, John Radcliffe spoke with his Russian counterpart.
The Kremlin does not exclude that the issue of a telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump may come up in the wake of the US-Ukrainian negotiations and could be organized quickly, Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, reported Russian state news agency TASS.
“We also do not rule out that the topic of a call at the highest level may arise. If such a need emerges, it will be organized very quickly. The existing channels of dialogue with the Americans make it possible to do this in a relatively short time,” he said.
“When we met, I hope I don’t reveal any secret, in Riyadh with [US Secretary of State] Marco Rubio and [national security adviser Mike Waltz] Mike Waltz and [special envoy for the Middle East] Steve Witkoff, they said, look, we want normal relations in the sense that the foundation of the American foreign policy under the Donald Trump administration is the national interest of the United States,” the top diplomat said.
According to him, at the same time, the Americans “understand that other countries also have their national interest.” “And with those countries who have their national interest and don’t play into the hands of somebody else’s interest, we (the US – TASS) are ready to have serious discussion,” Lavrov pointed out in a recent interview, added TASS.
