Moldova, a tiny state located between Romania and Ukraine, voted overnight according to polling results, to join the European Union in a very close election.

I walked across the Moldovan border from Ukraine after the Russian invasion in 2022. I also spent time investigating the political situation in Chisinau in 2019.

Moldova is typically run by oligarch factions with allegiances to either side.

There has been a struggle for control of the tiny nation between Moscow and the West for a decade, with Russian infiltration of political circles, and push back by the EU.

Moscow claimed suppression of the vote in the Transdneister region, an area occupied by Russian ‘peace keeping troops’ since the civil war in the early 1990s.

The referendum clearly failed in Moldova’s Gagauz autonomy and in the polling stations where residents of unrecognized Transnistria voted. While in Transnistria 62.56% voted against the referendum, in Gagauzia 94.84% opposed it. No polling stations were established within Transnistria, reported TASS.

Its seems the EU and the ‘West’ won this round.
