Senior Ukrainian official, Major General Kyrylo Budanov, who leads the country’s military intelligence service, confirmed in an interview with The Times of London that Kyiv has assassinated “quite a few” Russian civilians who have backed both Putin and his war in Ukraine. Budanov also vowed that there would be more attacks in the future.
While he didn’t name any of the victims, Budanov said, “We’ve already successfully targeted quite a few people.” He went on to say that, “there have been well-publicized cases everyone knows about, thanks to the media coverage.”
The assassination campaigns began after Russia illegally invaded Ukraine in February 2022 and have not only killed many prominent Russian supporters of the war but also countless innocent bystanders.
Perhaps the most prominent attack was carried out last August when journalist Darya Dugina was killed in a car bomb explosion that was possibly intended for her father, Aleksandr Dugin, an outspoken political scientist-philosopher.
Both father and daughter have been staunch supporters of Putin and the war in Ukraine and both were sanctioned by the U.S. after the invasion. Given her position and who her father is, it is possible that Ukraine assassinated her in a powerful two-for-one act of punishment targeting her father.
The most recent attack targeted novelist Zakhar Prielepin who was wounded in another car bombing on May 6.
Meanwhile, Russian military bigger Vladen Tatarsky died in an explosion in April at a public appearance after a woman approached him to give him a bust of his likeness. The bust contained an explosive and killed Tatarsky and wounded 15 others when it detonated inside the bar about 5 minutes later.

Ukraine’s quiet assassinations targeting Russian civilians are war crimes at the least and if one accepts that the definition of terrorism as “the intentional use of violence against civilians in order to obtain political aims,” then Budanov has indicated that Ukraine is a state sponsor of terrorism. A state sponsor that has received $37 billion in U.S. military aid since the invasion with more promised – not including additional assistance from other NATO allies, according to Zerohedge.
Budanov could not only be classified as a terrorist but also described as one who seems to enjoy the act. “These cases have happened and will continue,” he said in the interview. “Such people will receive a well-deserved punishment, and the appropriate punishment can only be liquidation and I will implement it,” he concluded.
In another interview with a Ukrainian YouTube channel, Budanov suggested that his punishments could extend beyond the borders of his own country saying, “Outright scum will eventually be punished in any country in the world. Only elimination can be a well-deserved punishment for such actions.”
Budanov also commented on the capabilities of the Russian army saying the “Russian army’s potential for advancing is completely depleted, but it still has a significant defensive potential.”
Regarding the possibility of a Ukrainian counteroffensive, Budanov commented that “[Russia has] erected a multi-tier defense system. Still, this isn’t the same Russian army that could have been expected to conduct substantial offensive operations.”
