Over the weekend, President Joe Biden departed Joint Base Andrews in Maryland to visit Ramstein Air Base in Germany before going to Kyiv for an unannounced visit to the Ukrainian capital on Monday. The visit comes a few days ahead of the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Biden’s visit comes amid a race against time as Ukraine’s Western allies rush to supply the country with new weaponry, including battle tanks, armored vehicles, and longer-range missiles, as Russia prepares for a massive spring offensive.

Biden announced $500 million in additional military aid for Ukraine during remarks alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at Mariinsky Palace in Kyiv. The new military aid will include anti-tank missiles, howitzers, ammunition, shells, air surveillance radar, and other support. Advanced weapons were not part of the additional military aid.

During the joint remarks, Biden said, “I thought it was critical that there not be any doubt, none whatsoever, about U.S. support for Ukraine in the war. I’m here to show our unwavering support for the nation’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.”

Meanwhile, Zelensky thanked Biden for coming to Kyiv “at a huge moment for Ukraine.” The Ukrainian president then said that talks would continue between Washington and Kyiv about actions on the frontlines and “about the people, about Ukrainians, about Americans…what we have to do to stop the war, to have success in this war… and how to win this year.”

Biden added that Russian President Vladimir Putin was “dead wrong” in believing that Russia could easily take Ukraine during the invasion almost a year ago.

“I am meeting with President Zelensky and his team for an extended discussion on our support for Ukraine,” Biden said during his comments.

“Over the last year, the United States has built a coalition of nations from the Atlantic to the Pacific to help defend Ukraine with unprecedented military, economic, and humanitarian support – and that support with endure,” he continued.

“We will announce additional sanctions against elites and companies that are trying to evade or backfill Russia’s war machine,” Biden concluded.

With both Russia and Ukraine preparing for spring offensives and the U.S. offering more military aid and support, it indicates that Russia’s war in Ukraine is far from over.

Biden is expected to visit Poland next, where he will speak with President Andrzej Duda and other European leaders.
