In a speech on Tuesday, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory in the Battle of Stalingrad, Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered a message to the U.S. and its allies that the West cannot stop Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The Biden administration agreed in recent weeks to send M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, followed almost immediately by Germany’s promise to send its sophisticated Leopard 2 tanks as well. In his remarks on Tuesday, Putin warned that Moscow would respond to the escalation with more than just armored vehicles.

Putin called the West’s commitment to send tanks to Ukraine a “blatant provocation” and added that it is “Unbelievable, but true – we are once again threatened with German Leopard tanks, with crosses on their hull. And once again seeking to battle Russia in Ukraine with the help of Hitler’s followers, the Banderites.”
Putin continued his warning, adding, “Those who expect to win a victory against Russia on the battlefield don’t understand that modern-day war with Russia will turn out totally differently for them.”
“We aren’t sending tanks to their borders, but we have the means to fight back and they won’t be limited to armor. Everyone should understand this,” Putin concluded.
In response to Moscow’s threat of nuclear war, the World Health Organization (WHO) updated its list of medications to be used in case of “nuclear emergencies” for the first time since 2007 and is urging countries to begin stockpiling the medications.
Meanwhile, Dmitry Medvedev, a close ally of Putin, has warned that a military defeat of Russia in Ukraine could lead to a nuclear war for the West.
In September, Putin issued this very clear warning to the U.S. and its NATO allies, “To those who allow themselves to make such statements about Russia, I would like to remind you that our country also has various means of destruction, and for some components more modern than those of the NATO countries. And if the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we will certainly use all the means at our disposal to protect Russia and our people. It’s not a bluff.”
