The southern Ukrainian region of Zaporizhzhia, on the Sea of Azov, will go forward with a referendum to join the Russian Federation, according to officials now running the jurisdiction for Moscow.
On 08 August 2022, according to reports, the Russian-installed head of southern Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region has signed a decree providing for a referendum on joining Russia, reported Inkerman.
It comes as Russia’s defence ministry said that Ukraine had shelled the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station, the biggest in Europe, on 07 August 2022, damaging high-voltage power lines and forcing the plant to reduce its output.
The head of the region, Yevgeny Balitsky, signed the document at the forum of the public movement “We are together with Russia”, which takes place in Melitopol. The event is attended by more than 700 representatives from all over the region. All the delegates in the room unanimously agreed to the proposal, added Inkerman.
It seems the Kremlin’s goal short-term is to solidify control of the Ukrainian port facilities on the Sea of Azov and to increase control over the land bridge to Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014.
