On Tuesday in the early morning, NATO fighter jets destroyed a drone that had entered Lithuania’s airspace from Belarus, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda announced in his X post.
“An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) entered the Lithuanian airspace and was destroyed by NATO fighter jets. The President emphasized that readiness in the region is essential for the reason of ongoing war in Ukraine,” Lithuania’s President Gitanas Nauseda stated in a post on X earlier today. The drone was shot down near the village of Pratkunai, some 20 km outside the central city of Kaunas, according to Lithuania’s emergency management authorities. LRT radio reported that the drone had entered the country’s airspace from Belarus and was heading west when it was intercepted.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys expressed his gratitude to the allied armed forces who participated in the operation, thanking them for a successful joint operation and calling the intercept a demonstration of defensive capabilities and allied coordination.
The Polish military located a suspected Russian drone at the bottom of the Baltic Sea near the northern Polish village of Rusinowo on Monday. Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed that based on a preliminary inspection it was a drone. Due to Russian drone attacks on Ukraine, Poland had also activated its air force on Monday as a precautionary measure.
This incident comes shortly after another intercept over the Baltics in May, when a NATO air policing mission shot down a Ukrainian drone that had strayed into Estonian airspace — the first such interception in a Baltic state since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Drone activity along the eastern NATO flank is increasing dramatically and now affects a large stretch of European territory well beyond the active combat zones in Ukraine itself.
The drone in question yesterday is likely a Ukrainian drone flying through territory to attack Russian targets.
