Azerbaijan Shoots Down Russian Helicopter In Armenia

Russia maintains a military base in Armenia, one of the belligerents in the ‘frozen conflict’ of the Soviet Union — Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijan admitted today shooting down a Russian MI-24 Hind attack helicopter by a ManPad (man portable) shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missile. Two crew members were killed and one hospitalized.

Azerbaijan immediately apologized to the Russian government.

“The Azerbaijani side offers an apology to the Russian side in connection with this tragic incident,” the foreign ministry said in a statement, adding the move was an accident and “not aimed against” Moscow.

The Azerbaijani government declared the incident transpired due to “tense situation in the region and increased combat readiness”.
