Former Prime Minister Sali Berisha announced his intentions to return to the helm of the Democratic Party (PD) as its leader.
On Friday, Berisha and his Refoundation Group visited the PD’s Headquarters to speak with formal members of the party following Lulzim Basha’s resignation as chairman.
But Basha stepping aside has not led to a reconciliation between the two factions of the PD that has been divided since September, when Basha expelled Berisha from its parliamentary group.
However, Berisha’s pronouncement was met with protests by acting chairman Enkelejd Alibeaj.
Alibeaj said that the interests of the Democratic Party cannot be served by someone who has been designated for corruption by the United States, accusations which Berisha rejects.
“The PD cannot build its future by looking towards the past,” according to Alibeaj who added that he had asked Berisha to resign.
Furthermore, the acting leader declared that they would be appealing the ruling of a Tirana Court which essentially ratifies Berisha’s grouping and the decisions taken by its National Assembly of December 11.
Earlier this week, the formal PD had announced that they are not going to hold leadership elections until after the local elections of Summer 2023.
Berisha’s Refoundation Group, however, had planned to select new party leadership this Spring.
